Formulas
- Ounces held = quantity in grams ÷ 31.1034768, or kilograms × 1,000 ÷ 31.1034768; ounces stay as entered for troy ounces.
- Current value = ounces held × live silver spot (USD/oz) × exchange rate to the selected currency.
- Purchase value = quantity × purchase price per selected unit (in the selected currency).
- Gain / loss = current value − purchase value; percentage = gain ÷ purchase value × 100.
- Future value (if a future price is entered) = ounces held × future price per ounce in the selected currency.
Worked example (illustrative prices, not live)
10 troy ounces bought at $50 per ounce: purchase value = 10 × $50 = $500. At a spot of $54.046 per ounce, current value = 10 × $54.046 = $540.46, gain = $40.46 (+8.09%). At a future price of $60 per ounce, future value = 10 × $60 = $600.
Premiums, spreads, storage and taxes are not included; a dealer sale would realise less than the spot value.
Frequently asked questions
Does the holdings calculator include dealer premiums?
No. It values the metal at spot. What you paid may already include a premium, which is why the purchase price you enter should be your actual all-in price per unit if you want a true gain or loss.
What if the live price is unavailable?
The calculator shows an error and does not calculate, rather than using a guessed or stale-as-live price. A stale quote, if one exists, is labelled stale on the page.
