What “spot” means
When traders say “gold is at $X”, they almost always mean the spot price: the price agreed for gold delivered immediately (in market practice, within a couple of business days), as opposed to a futures contract that settles months ahead. Spot is quoted in US dollars per troy ounce (31.1034768 grams) for 24K, fine gold.
Spot is a wholesale benchmark. The price a consumer pays for a coin, bar or piece of jewellery is the spot value of the metal content plus fabrication, distribution, taxes and margin — so it is always higher than the spot value of the same weight, and it varies from seller to seller.
Spot vs futures, in one paragraph
Futures prices (such as COMEX GC=F, used for our history charts) are prices for gold delivered on a specified future date. They usually track spot closely but are not identical: the gap reflects interest rates, storage costs and market expectations. Our history charts are always labelled as futures so the two are never confused.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the spot gold price?
The current market price for immediate delivery of one troy ounce of pure (24K) gold, quoted in US dollars. Gold Updates converts it into grams, kilograms, tolas and other currencies.
How is spot different from the price in a shop?
A shop price adds making charges, premiums, taxes and a dealer margin to the spot value of the metal. Spot alone is not a retail price.
Why do different websites show slightly different spot prices?
Feeds update at different times and may quote different benchmarks or round differently. Small differences of a few dollars are normal; large, persistent gaps usually mean one source is stale.
Methodology note
All figures derive from a single live XAU spot quote: per-gram = per-ounce / 31.1034768; per-kilogram = per-gram x 1000; per-tola = per-gram x 11.6638038; purity = karat / 24 applied once. Currency conversions use market exchange rates (USD base) and are international spot equivalents, not shop prices. Full details: Data Sources & Methodology.
