How the spot price is determined

The spot price is the price for immediate delivery of gold — a trade settled “on the spot” rather than at a future date. It is quoted continuously while markets are open and reflects the balance of buying and selling in the global over-the-counter market, together with benchmark auctions and futures-market trading. Because gold trades around the clock across time zones, the quote moves through the day and can gap when markets reopen after weekends or holidays.

Gold Updates shows the international spot benchmark in US dollars per troy ounce and converts it at market exchange rates. We do not set a price, and we do not publish any jeweller, dealer or shop price.

What moves the spot price

  • The US dollar: gold is priced in dollars, so a stronger dollar usually makes gold dearer in other currencies, and vice versa.
  • Interest-rate and inflation expectations: gold pays no interest, so it tends to compete less well when real interest rates rise, and to attract buyers when inflation or rate cuts are expected.
  • Central-bank buying: large official-sector purchases can support demand over months and years.
  • Uncertainty: geopolitical tension, financial stress and market sell-offs often lift safe-haven demand for gold.
  • Physical supply and demand: mine output, recycling, jewellery demand and investment flows (bars, coins and funds) all feed into the balance.
  • Futures positioning: speculative positions on exchanges such as COMEX can amplify short-term moves in both directions.

Spot, futures and shop prices are three different numbers

Spot is for immediate delivery. Futures are contracts for delivery later, so a futures price includes financing and storage expectations and can sit above or below spot. A shop price adds making charges, premiums, taxes and the dealer’s margin on top of the metal value. Comparing them directly, without those adjustments, will always look like a mismatch — it is not an error in any one of them.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the live gold price?

It is the current international XAU spot price per troy ounce of pure (24K) gold, converted here into other units and currencies at market exchange rates.

How often does the live price update?

The spot quote is cached for up to five minutes; exchange rates refresh daily. If a feed is temporarily unreachable, we show the last available quote and mark it clearly as stale — we never invent a price.

Is this the price my local jeweller will charge?

No. Jeweller prices add making charges, premiums, taxes and dealer margins. Our figures are international spot equivalents — a reference for comparison, not a shop price.

Why did the price move since my last visit?

Spot gold moves continuously with currency markets, interest-rate expectations, central-bank demand, uncertainty and futures trading. See the drivers listed above for the main factors.

Methodology note

All figures derive from a single live XAU spot quote: per-gram = per-ounce / 31.1034768; per-kilogram = per-gram x 1000; per-tola = per-gram x 11.6638038; purity = karat / 24 applied once. Currency conversions use market exchange rates (USD base) and are international spot equivalents, not shop prices. Full details: Data Sources & Methodology.
