Gold Price in India
This page presents gold prices in India as the international spot-price equivalent converted at market exchange rates. It is not a local jeweller or shop price, which is set separately by each seller. Shop prices can be higher or lower because of making charges, taxes, premiums and dealer margins.
In India, gold is commonly quoted per gram and per tola, with the tola remaining a familiar traditional unit alongside grams.

Gold in India: currency, quoting and coins
Market context
Gold buyers in India trade in the same international market as buyers everywhere else: there is no separate local spot price. What differs locally is the currency, taxes, premiums and shop charges — the metal itself is priced from the one international benchmark, converted here into INR.
Currency
The currency is the Indian rupee (INR), divided into 100 paise. Prices on this page are the international spot price converted at the current market exchange rate for INR; the conversion rate, not a local dealer board, is what moves the figures here when exchange rates move.
How gold is quoted locally
The international benchmark is quoted per troy ounce in US dollars. Local shops in India most commonly quote by the gram for jewellery and small bars; the per-ounce, per-gram and per-kilo figures above are all the same converted price, only the unit changes.
In South Asian markets, gold is also widely quoted per tola (11.6638 grams); the tola figure above uses that exact conversion, so a tola quote and a gram quote from the same spot price will agree once weight is accounted for.
National coin
No national bullion coin is named on this page for India. Whatever coin or bar a dealer stocks, its value follows weight and purity first — confirm both, and the total price including any premium, before buying.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why does my local jeweller's rate differ from this page?
This page reflects the converted international spot price, whereas a jeweller adds making charges, taxes and a margin, and may update their board rate at different times during the day.
What affects the gold price in Indian rupees?
The rupee price follows the international gold market and the rupee's exchange rate against major currencies, so it can move even when the dollar price is steady.
What is the difference between buying jewellery and buying a coin or bar?
Jewellery usually carries making charges and design costs, while coins and bars are typically priced closer to the metal value plus a smaller dealer premium.
What should I check before buying gold in India?
Confirm the weight in grams, the purity, the making charges and the total amount payable, and ask for a detailed bill showing each of these separately.
Pricing methodology
Gold Updates takes one XAU spot quote in USD, converts it at the current market exchange rate for INR, then derives grams (ounce / 31.1034768), kilograms (grams x 1000) and tolas (grams x 11.6638038). Purity multiplies by karat / 24, applied once. Full details: Data Sources & Methodology.
