Formulas
- Ounces = quantity in grams ÷ 31.1034768, or kilograms × 1,000 ÷ 31.1034768; ounces stay as entered for troy ounces.
- Total buy cost = ounces × buy price per ounce.
- Total sell proceeds = ounces × sell price per ounce.
- Profit / loss = sell proceeds − buy cost − fees; return = profit ÷ buy cost × 100.
- Break-even sell price = buy price + fees ÷ ounces.
Worked example (illustrative prices, not live)
Buy 20 ounces at $50 per ounce and sell at $55 per ounce with no fees: buy cost = 20 × $50 = $1,000; sell proceeds = 20 × $55 = $1,100; profit = $100 (+10.00%). With $20 of fees, profit = $80 (+8.00%) and break-even sell price = $50 + $20 ÷ 20 = $51 per ounce.
This is a trade arithmetic tool, not investment advice. Taxes and dealer spreads are not included unless entered as fees.
Frequently asked questions
Is profit calculated before or after fees?
After fees: profit = sell proceeds minus buy cost minus the fees you enter. Leave fees blank for zero.
Does this calculator use the live price?
No — it uses the buy and sell prices you enter, so you can test completed or planned trades. For a live valuation of a holding, use the silver holdings calculator.
